"I started the quilt circa 1973, and after being brought up in a very frugal family where every scrap of material and clothing was used and used again, I decided not to use any new fabric. So some of the 3,782 hexagons are made from clothes I can remember my father's sister wearing, and some of my clothes made for me by this aunty - Aunty Doris - and even pieces from her mother's - my Grandma's - blouse, which must be well over 65 years old (she died when I was 3 years old). Although it has been in the making for 37 years, it is completely sewn and quilted by hand. Many months, then years went by with it languishing in cupboards, and each time it came out, I began again with fresh enthusiasm, and after joining Viñuela Sew & Sews, I was encouraged to bring it out again. Ann Stamp and Jan Pearson helped me assemble it and I began the quilting. Now after a further year the end is in sight and hopefully it will be on show at our group Exhibition in September 2010, faults and all for everyone to see".
We look forward to seeing this quilt hanging at the exhibition, Joyce, it is an amazing achievement. While we were photographing the quilt in the Hall, Joyce shed a tear or two, she had never seen the quilt like this before and it certainly evoked many memories for her! |
