Exercise 1 - Texture

After many weeks of making designs using "textured" black and white papers created by making rubbings of various household surfaces, we decided we would use just one of the designs produced and each make samples using cream toned fabrics and thread, all donated by the design group members.  The design chosen was one of Irene's produced in the previous exercises, and was simply two circles and two lines.  We agreed on an A5-sized sample in three categories.  The first sample was to be made using some or all of the five fabrics chosen to work with and stitch only, no embellishment.  The second sample would depict the same design on calico using stitch only to depict texture, and the third sample was to be made using any media we liked and preferred working in, as long as we kept to neutral colours.  We gave ourselves the week to produce at least one of the samples each, so we could discuss and critique what we had done before the holiday break.  It was a very interesting meeting, as most had produced at least two of the samples, photographs can be seen below.
