Group History and Activities

About us

La VinuelaWe are a growing group of stitching enthusiasts, based in Southern Spain, who meet up on a weekly basis to stitch and improve our techniques and knowledge. Originally known as "Periana Stitchers" we started the group in early 2007 and met in Jan's house in Periana.
When we outgrew her room, we renamed ourselves to reflect the new larger venue at La Viñuela,  in a hall generously provided to us by the Ayuntamiento (website: www.lavinuela.es)
Group members enjoy various types of needlecrafts and meetings are currently held weekly on Tuesdays.

In mid 2011 a few group members formed an off-shoot group called Diversity, which runs alongside the main group, with the aim of developing design principles which could help them in future projects

What we do

In December 2012, the Ayuntamiento offered us the use of a newly refurbished hall, which is large enough to hold our weekly meeting and workshops on the same day.  Members share their skills by teaching others in newEmbroidery Workshop techniques, which seem mainly to revolve around patchwork and quilting, but have also covered silk flower embroidery and machine embroidery, and we have plans for more diverse activities in the pipeline such as fabric dyeing and painting . See some of our past workshops.  There is a growing band of ladies interested in crochet work, making interesting woven crochet rugs.
As part of our regular meetings, we participate as a group in making quilts which are donated to local charities including Cudeca (a cancer care charity) and CAS (an animal charity) to be raffled to raise funds for those charities, usually making these to coincide with events around Christmas time. Ann Stamp used to drive these projects along once the decision has been made on a quilt design and most members make a block or two, Ann collated them, and made up the quilts. Often various members added the quilting or stitched on the binding. See our Charity quilts HERE.

Bowls display Expo2008In 2008 we successfully held our first exhibition, with a special quilt being designed and made by group members to raise funds for a local charity Anne-Axarquia.  The Viñuela Mayor presented the funds raised to a representative and beneficiaries of the charity, in front of local TV cameras in the Mancomunidad Rooms in Torre del Mar, with newspaper coverage in the Costa del Sol News.  A report of the exhibition and photographs can be seen HERE.

We held an equally successful 2nd exhibition in October 2010, raising 1,200 Euros by selling tickets for a raffle, prizes included two large quilts made by members of the group and a large dressed doll, also made and donated as a prize by Doreen one of the  group members, for the same charity Anne-Axarquia.  Photos and further reports of this show can be seen by clicking HERE.

In September 2012, we were approached by the Mayor of Viñuela and asked to put on a display of our quilts at the Feria de la Pasa.  October 2012 saw the hugely successful third exhibition by the group, when this time despite the dire economic situation in Spain, visitors dug deep into their pockets and we raised just over 2,000 Euros for our adopted charity, Anne-Axarquia.  Two large quilts donated by group members, and a Tombola stall helped boost the funds.  Photos and reports of the show can be seen by clicking HERE.
