LAST UPDATE UNTIL 13th SEPTEMBER 2010
Summer Recess - Last meeting till September
There's not much to report from last week's meeting as many members are now winding down for the summer recess. Elle brought in a huge foundation pieced New York Beauty quilt she's been working on. She's at the border stage and is determined it will be finished during the summer and be ready to hang in our exhibition in October. Eloise is making great progress on her Kaffe Fassett inspired quilt, using his hat-box design in lovely small print fabrics she has collected over the years. Kath is moving along too with her Japanese style wall hanging which includes some traditional Sashiko hand stitching, in brick-reds on a cream background. I have almost completed the tulip charity quilt quilting, only the hanging sleeve, label and binding remain to be done now. Cath has finished a runner made after taking a class with Ann Stamp, using positive and negative motifs from the same block design, and she's also made another padded etui box. I have put the last seed beads around the edges of the little mixed media screen I have been making, and photos of these can all be seen by clicking on the names in Members Gallery Updates.
I'm off to visit my family for a few weeks and attend a wedding in the UK , and I am looking forward to seeing some wonderful quilts at the huge Festival of Quilts exhibition in Birmingham, hoping to come back with lots of inspiring ideas for the group. I will be meeting Irene from our group there, and Yvonne from the group in Nerja. It will be difficult to resist all the wonderful books and accessories sold by dozens and dozens of traders at the show, but I will be stocking up on some items that we just can't buy here in Spain and have a short list of books too. Hopefully I'll be able to take some photos to show here next month. Although many major shows are now banning the taking of photographs I hope this won't be the case at Festival of Quilts which is one of the major quilt shows in Europe and well worth a visit by anyone in the area.

Flamenco Evening
What an amazing evening we had on Wednesday at Flamenco Fusion in Torrox Costa! I don't think any of us quite expected the marvellous performance put on by the resident dancer Michelle "la Caoba" and the internationally renowned Omayra Amaya, (the daughter of Olga and Curro Amaya and grandniece of arguably the greatest Flamenco dancer who ever lived, Carmen Amaya). You might like to check out her website www.omayraamaya.com to read about this amazing dancer. Everyone who attended really enjoyed the evening, and some are returning this week with friends to see the performances again. If you are looking for something different to do this summer, why not pay the restaurant a visit. Photos of our evening out can be seen HERE.
Art Quilter Video
More and more quilters are introducing other elements into traditional quilting techniques. Here are three short videos where Australian quilter Gloria Loughman shows us how she creates her fabric backgrounds with paint before adding appliqué pieces to create some stunning landscape quilts. Part 1, Part 2, Part 3. Enjoy!

This will be the last webpage update for a few weeks, while site maintenance is carried out and the group has it's summer recess, so I wish you all a good summer and hope you come back and visit us again on 13th September to find out how our first Autumn meeting goes, and find out about feverish preparations which will be underway for our own exhibition in October. We are bringing a couple of new features to the webpage in the near future too, one being a peak into the sewing areas of group members, be it the end of the dining room table or the luxury of a dedicated sewing room. I do know one of our members had to resort to the vanity-unit top in a guest bathroom when her usual space wasn't available!! See you soon,
Rachel
